Miller's Corner Sidney, MT |
Amsterdam Meat Shop Manhattan, MT |
|
A small windmill stood in front of the Dutch Mill drive-in which opened in the 1940s. It operated at this location which later came to be known as Miller's Corner. The Dutch Mill operated until at least 1979. In 2000, the property was sold and a gas station was built. The windmill was in bad shape by then. This replica was built, in a Danish rather than Dutch style. It was flattened by a car at some point and then rebuilt in 2012. The windmill is 30 feet tall. [map]
The Amsterdam Meat Shop opened in 1949. I don't know when this windmill was built. [map] |

This Windmill in Minot was built as a functioning windmill in 1928 by Carl Olson and installed in Powers Lake, ND. In the mid-1960s, it was donated and moved to Roosevelt Park in Minot. Later, it was taken down for restoration. A concrete and rock base was built in Scandinavian Heritage Park and the windmill was installed there in 1992. [map]
This Windmill in Fremont was built in 1929 and originally installed in Silver Creek, NE for the Dutch Windmill Cabin Court where it was installed on top of a gas station. The business later became the Dutch Mill Motel. In 1982, the windmill was moved to Fremont where it was used for the Wooden Windmill restaurant which closed in 2022. For more, see this website. This Windmill House was built around 1910. The blades look like they turned at one time. In the past few years, the building has fallen into worse shape. Hardly any trace of the blades remains. In 2014, the building was still standing, bladeless, behind chain link fencing. By 2016, it was gone. For more, see this website. |

This Windmill Restaurant opened in 1964 as a hot dog stand with this three-story windmill. There are now seven other locations but this is the only one with a windmill. For more, see this website. The Towne Crier building was designed by Henry Sandig in 1970 for the Zuider Zee Seafood Inn. It later housed Red Crow Drive Inn and the Pizza Mill & Sub Factory. The Towne Crier moved here in 1984. There was a record at the center of the windmill blades. The store now focuses on home and car stereos. Around 2022, the sign was replaced with a new sign and the wooden shingles were gone. The windmill blades were covered with signs. [map] |

The Windmill in Rotterdam was located in a Kmart shopping center when this photo was taken in 2005. It is about 17 feet tall. It was built in 1949 for a home builder's show in Albany, NY. After that, it was moved to a nursery in Guilderland, NY. In 1987, it was moved to the owner's private residence and used as a storage shed. In 1992, it was donated to the city of Rotterdam. It was moved near a restaurant and later moved to the shopping center. In 2009, the windmill was moved to the entrance to the Great Flats Nature Trail. For more, see this website. [map]
The windmill was chosen as the town's symbol in 1989. I believe this welcome sign was installed then. This Windmill in Amsterdam is at a farm. It was probably functional originally. The photo above is from 2009. By 2016, the blades had been repaired. In 2021, one of the blades was missing again. [map] |
